The Homeowner’s Experience With kitchenCRATE

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process? 

My favorite part of the process was working with Willy and Casey on the design and the selection of materials for the kitchen. Casey was so helpful with the cabinet color, hardware selection and the tile selection. It was great having her assist me in putting everything together. The timeline that Jake provided before you began the project was also very helpful.

What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?

You have a great team. They were on-time each morning, courteous, very helpful, and cleaned
up every afternoon when they left.

Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?

I was very surprised and pleased when they finished the project a day earlier than scheduled.

Day by Day Progress Breakdown

(Note: We added extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons, like these.)

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1 – Demo Day!  On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertops, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, and cabinet doors and drawers. We also reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new granite counters. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new granite countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.

Day 2 –  The sheetrock at the countertop was repaired and made ready for the new tile backsplash.

Day 3 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets in the kitchen.  Using a high-grade, oil-based primer every inch of the kitchen cabinets were caulked, sanded and primed.  This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.

Day 4 – The painters then began refinishing the kitchen cabinets in this Modesto home. Two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy semi-glass paint in Magic Sail were applied to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets.  This same priming and painting process was used on the new shaker doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality. The walls and ceiling in the kitchen also received a fresh coat of paint. Kelly-Moore Graystone with a satin finish was applied to the walls and Acoustic White was applied to the ceiling.

Day 5 – The countertop installation team arrived to install the beautiful Blanco Precis Super Single bowl sink in Biscotti and the Arizona Tile Golden Ridge polished granite countertops with a soft mitered edge detail.

Day 7 – The tile backsplash artisans were on site to install the Arizona Tile Troy 3″ x 6″ tumbled travertine tiles on the backsplash. The backsplash was grouted using Laticrete Latte grout.

Days 8 & 9 –  Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s appliances.  The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted new shaker cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Bellera faucet with a vibrant stainless finish was installed and the entire project was cleaned of all construction debris.
