With a house full of teenagers/young adults (6!), the kitchenCRATE Wickford homeowners certainly have their hands full.

And now they can check “remodel the kitchen” off their to-do list: last week kitchenCRATE turned this 1978 ranch-style kitchen into a contemporary, bright, clean space in which to cook, entertain and enjoy!

What is your favorite part of this job? You can decide for yourself, but we like the beautiful Quickstep laminate flooring turned out wonderfully and offers a perfect contrast to the cabinets and countertops.

The Homeowner’s Experience

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?

My favorite part of the process was choosing the components of the new kitchen. My kitchen was a very dated 70’s kitchen. Using the kitchenCRATE choices, which were narrowed down to a reasonable selection, helped me to choose and coordinate surfaces, floors and paint colors. I do not consider myself an expert at this and the support of Scott and his designer helped make it simple.  My husband and I both work outside of the home so having the flexibility of meeting with Scott and really planning the project assured me I would not have to make last minute decisions.

What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?

The kitchenCRATE team was prompt and put in long days.  It was clear from the beginning that there would be no delays; work would progress as planned. I felt comfortable with the crew in my house and felt comfortable looking in from time to time.

Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?

The biggest surprise about the project was how great it ended up looking.  My family is very pleased.  Everyone who has walked in has been shocked at the improvement.  It has definitely prodded me to keep the kitchen organized and as pristine as it looks now. My only regret is that I did not do this sooner!

Day by Day Progress

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1 – Demo Day!  On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors, and drawers.  We also removed the inset fluorescent fixtures in order to make room for LED can-lighting.  Toward the end of the day, we created the template for the new granite countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.  Lastly, we removed the old sheet vinyl flooring to make room for the new Quickstep Laminate flooring in the kitchen, laundry, hall, dinette and living rooms.

Day 2 – The electrical team began the wiring for the new LED can lighting, described in more detail below.  We also continued with flooring demo and off-hauling of debris.

Day 3 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets.  Using a high-grade oil-based primer, every inch of the kitchen cabinet exteriors and interiors were caulked, sanded and primed.  This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.

Day 4 – The painters then applied two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy paint in Graystone to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets.  This same priming and painting process was used on the doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality.

Day 5 – Next, the electricians got to work installing the pattern-specific LED can lighting.  5″ LED can lights were placed strategically around the kitchen. These lights are installed to maximize light levels for the most common countertop uses. The old fluorescent lighting box was patched with sheet-rock, textured and painted.

Day 6 – The capable team at Artistic Edge arrived to install the beautiful Kohler Bakersfield undermounted sink in almond and the MSI Giallo Ornamental countertops with a mitered edge.

Day 7 – Artistic Edge was back on-site, this time to install the  Bedrosian’s Veracruz Sand 3″ x 6″ travertine tiles in a brick pattern with offset joints for the backsplash.

Day 8 – Artistic Edge returned one more time to add Laticrete almond grout to the backsplash.

Day 9-11 – Abney Carpet began installing the Quickstep laminate flooring in Veresque Varnished Bay Maple to the kitchen, laundry, hall, dinette and living rooms.

Day 12 –  Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s previous appliances.  The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Forte faucet was installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
